Thanks techies, 10 points to the best answer.Can you give me advice folks, computer question?
Well. His best bet would be to buy a ';Belkin'; Wireless router. There about 40pounds. I am on virgin media and it's really simple to use. (I have a belkin router)

You connect the wire from your Virgin media set top box to your router. Then you can have wired connections from the router to other PC's that are wired. It's also Wireless. All you have to do is set the router up (Password, name of router. Security on it, ect) (Set up is all on a disk)

Then on your new laptop. (should really come with wireless built in. Most do nowerdays) All you have to do is ';Search wireless connection'; And you will see your router. Connect to it, enter your password and you will be connected... Simple really. If your not good with computers then belkin gives you a walk through.. step by step..

Good luck and i hope it all goes well.

(When you buy a laptop ask if it has wireless built into it.) [If not then you can get a ';dongle'; for about 15quid.] {My belkin router came with a free dongle}

He needs to connect the pc to a router and then when he connects the laptop it will find the network automatically. Double click on the network icon on the taskbar and put in the key which will be on the base of the router. Connected wirelessly. Then you can remove the pc and you will have a wireless network.
Any decent laptop should have the LAN/RJ45 connection check before you buy, most new laptops have wireless built in. To go wireless your friend would need a wireless router and a dongle if wireless is not built into the laptop not very expensive.
i agree with the guy above my answer because that is the words i want to say
