What Advice Would You Give To Someone Wishing To Get A Job With The UN (United Nations)???

I am aspiring for a career in International Relations...In Particular I would relish an opportunity to work for the UN. Does anyone have any constructive advice, thoughts, hintsn'tips and opinions????What Advice Would You Give To Someone Wishing To Get A Job With The UN (United Nations)???
I worked for the United Nations Devt Programme (UNDP) for years.

My first advice is to first determine the right agency you want to join.

And get at least a masters degree or even better PhD before you apply for a position with the UN. An advanced degree would allow you to get a PS or Professional Staff position.

UN has two staff levels -- GS or General Services (mostly admin and research assistant positions at most) and the PS (professional staff). One of the realities of working in the UN is that it is incredibly hard to move from GS to PS -- PS of course is where the best pay scale are. Bureaucracy in the UN is even worse than in the government.

Immerse yourself in development issues especially whatever it is you want to excel in. For example, topics such as

- women in development

- governance

- sustainable development

Study each UN agency and find the best one that will be of interest to you. What Advice Would You Give To Someone Wishing To Get A Job With The UN (United Nations)???
