Trying to help a fam friend find her dad. But cant come up with a good strategy because she only knows his name and that he got her mom pregnant in Memphis-- that's it.
He's probably still living. I said hey, you can just pick up the phone book, but he might deny. Then my mother who has only become acquainted thru my venture tries to tell me and the friends that she need to troll thru countless censuses to see if he's still there-- BUT IT DOESNT MATTER IF SHE DOESNT KNOW WHO HE REALLY IS FROM SOME OTHER GUY WITH THE SAME NAME.
This is causing issues so please give me some advice.Need Advice. How to find someone when you only know name?
In the US, census records are restricted by law to 72 yrs, meaning that he would have had to be born prior to 1930 to even be in the last open census. In reality, the reason for restrictions is to prevent use of such information for identifying living persons, and thus when the census is taken.. confidentiality can be assured. Restricting personal information is becoming even more important these days, since more and more people are becoming victims of things like id theft.
And (as stated in your note), it would be critical to insure that with several men of the same name, it would be hard to be sure this is the same person.
In real life?? Even if mom knew EXACTLY who he was then, and where he is now, that would do nothing to prevent a dispute, that would only be solved by DNA testing. Or by cooperation and help from a suspected sibling. There are thousands of cases of fathers being found, years after the fact, and happy reunions. Those are the successes. I personally have to consider that many such situations do NOT end the way people would like. The same is true of adoptive searches, and people have to weigh all the pros and cons.
From my genealogy standpoint, I completely respect the feelings of many adults (or children) who are involved in not being certain of paternity. Given the limited information, my own opinion is that this one is a real stretch, and unlikely to work.Need Advice. How to find someone when you only know name?
Maybe it is possible to identify this person on 1930 Census and through that research back and add him %26amp; family to a family tree back when there were so many fewer people. The ';probably still living'; suggests that's not the timeframe that person was known so it's looking like a shot in the dark.
Maybe some other category has different advice.

When trying to find living people whom you do not know, it is important to remember a couple of things. 1. You have no way of knowing who the person really is, or what they are like. (priest vs/ ax murder). 2. You have no way of knowing if that person is willing to meet you or will even acknowledge you, even after DNA proves a relationship.
Census records in this case would be of NO help at all! I would start with a directory like Switchboard.com. They will give you a list of people in the area with that last name. (I hope it is not John Smith!) You can either write or call those people and ask a few questions to see if they really are the person you are looking for. Be ready to get hangups, and have people question you about who you are. DO hold back one or two vital clues so you know they are really the person you are hunting. If the person went to school with your friends mother, you might also want to contact the local high schools to find the name of the person who is doing reunions. They might also be able to put you in contact with the person you are hunting for.
Good luck with your search! It can be done, I know I have found people this way.

your friend needs to talk to her mum %26amp; find out any info - what school he went to, jobs he had, car he owned, who he lived with, did he ever talk about his family, etc. - old pictures, any little clues.
then she needs to get a copy of her birth certificate and see if his name is on it.
she can also post queries on bulletin boards.
this is her search not yours so suggest you only lend a sympathetic ear rather than trying to do it for her.
