My husband's having a vasectomy in a couple of weeks. If you've had one, do you have any advice for him? How long did your recovery take? What made the discomfort more bearable? Are you glad you did it?If you've had a vasectomy, do you have any advice for my husband?
I never had children, but I had a vasectomy when I was 21.
1. He should ask for a ';traditional vasectomy';. They have been performing them for about 100 years, and the technology is well known. The high-tech vasectomies are unreliable.
2. He needs to make absolutely sure he follows the doctors advice exactly. That means NO lifting, or playing ball.
3. Make sure he goes in to have the samples tested.
4. Continue to use condoms for about 9 months to a year after the surgery. Any accident would have resulted in an abortion, so I was not taking any chances.
5. Don't listen to ONE SINGLE WORD from anyone that has not had a vasectomy. They have no idea what they are talking about. Lots of urban legends about vasectomy exist.
6. The novelty of a vasectomy never ends. Mark the day on your calendar. It is worthy of celebrating.
I had mine done on a Friday, and it was nothing. I think the surgery took 15 min. There was no notable pain. I was back to work on Monday. I was back to having sex again by the following weekend.
I have no scar. I have to say getting a vasectomy was the best thing I have ever done in my life.If you've had a vasectomy, do you have any advice for my husband?
Hi, Heron!
I had one after our last child (duh...) and at first I was not very willing, but my wife convinced me by saying she went through childbearind twice, so I could do this once...lol!
Anyway, the procedure didn't take long, and I do remember that I was sore for about 2 days before it got much better. I found that an ice pack in my lap helped A LOT!!! And my wife kept the ice coming! After about 2 days I was feeling more normal, I think we tried sex in about a week. It has been great ever since! Just remind him to check his semen at the drs. every so often or whatever they recommend. I wish him- and you- luck!
you may email me if you'd like!

I had my vasectomy on a Friday, had sex on Sat, Sun, and Tuesday. Of course, I wasn't very active, she was doing the work, but I had to know everything still worked ok! As others have said, it takes about 15 minutes, there is no pain, just a bit of a tugging sensation, and since the tubes are cauterized, there is no wait time before sex. The main thing is to sit on ice for the first two days and stay pretty much put, and whatever you do DO NOT LIFT anything. I went back to work on Monday, by Wed I felt so normal that I never even gave a second thought about lifting things. After my testicles swelled to the size of cantaloupes ( so it seemed ), I realized that they were serious about not lifting. That took several days to get over, and was just dumb on my part.
Good luck, and I hope they give you Loracette for the pain killer afterwards. ( I think that contributed to the erection that wouldn't go away for days!!!)
I had mine two months ago. It was on a Thursday. I returned to work on Monday. It was nothing until I jumped down from my lifted truck on Tuesday. That was a big mistake. Before that, there was no pain at all. By Tuesday, I was fine. I never looked back.
Like the other guy, I never had children.
I'm female--so never had one!!! My husband was rather petrified to do this--but finally did and admits it's nothing!! Obviously the doctor will make a difference--hopefully they are gentle and have no problems. (generally no problems) he was swollen and bruised for a little while(couple days on swelling and bruising about a week --then okay!!! Just tell him REAL MEN GET VASECTOMY';S!!!!!!!
